Then he Said

Without effects

I finally tried to add a few effects to make it look like the image had aged, its a mixture of noise, a filter effect and i changed the image levels to try and darken the blacks and make them stand out more.

Its all just Black and White

Here is my attempt at a Combine staff room in Neal Adams style. I wanted to capture a lighter side of the evil enemy. I also encorporated two little easter eggs, hats from team fortress 2 and the companion cube from portal which are other Valve top games. I really like this image in just black and white, im a bit tentative to add colour but i want to go for the original batman style using block colours and an old grain style.

A Hail of Fire

I wanted to try my hand first on something easier than a full person. I felt trying a fairly straight edged object would be easiest, so i went with the classic HL2 weapon the AR2 rifle. I felt i managed to get this working pretty well, the pure black wide lines are where they should be, the only thing im not so keen on is the shadows, i find it hard to get the cross hatching down right especially over the entire object. I feel the wide lines show the basic position but they need more cross-hatching. The only time the lack of cross hatching works is when the object is under direct light.

Break Time

Ive added these pictures because i wanted a quick look at lunch break rooms for an idea of Combine chatting about their day during break. I also looked at how the army are jsut regular people who all chat take breaks and have a laugh.

Revenge of the Giant Face

This is my attempt at the iconic Combine mask. I find it pretty difficult to get straight edges with my cross hatching, but i feel the block black i have placed seem to be in the right areas. I just try and pick the darkest spots that blend into one. The weakest parts of this image is the ventilators at the front

Dad's Army

Instead of going down the generic good guy route i have had an idea to use the bad guys in the scenario, the Combine. An elite transhuman army commanded by aliens. I wanted to show the more civil himan side of the group, an idea i had is what do they do when they arent hunting Gordon Freeman? They are just people after all.

I also like the combine because they remind me of the foot soldiers from comic books, with their very brutal style and covered faces. In general i just want to try and show a bad guys day off.

I am the Batman

Some research pictures.

I love how Neal Adam uses his line strokes, specifically i love how he can use block black and still make the drawing stand out and look like its shaded.

I think i prefer his line art more than his coloured pieces. The detail he is able to put in is extraordinary.
Neal Adam's most iconic character, I really want to try to use negative space for detail like Neal Adams does as seen above, less is more.

A Roll of the Dice

After a pretty hard decision ive decided to mix the Half-Life quote with the Neal Adams style. I really like the ink line art style with colour and without and thats something i want to play with. Because i dont have to keep to the half-life 1 game i just need to imply the quote,i still want to do the halflife universe i just think im going to move to the more known half life 2. A first idea ive ahd is to take a few screenshots of memorable points in the game and then try and convert them into the style of Neal Adams.

Crime is Art

Banksy

An anonomous political activist graffitti writer. Every one of his graffitti pieces has a message and most of them are also created 'illegally'. I really like the style though i feel it would be hard to duplicate via photoshop. If i am going to try to re-create banksy work i would have to get out and actually spray paint and stencil things

Three's a Crowd

Sherrie Levine

Ive never been a lover of photographic art

Gerhard Richter

I dont know what it is about this guys style but his images seem really creepy, he blurs them ever so slightly in the eyes and notable features, almost taking away the part that makes them feel human. Its really cool but i can imagine its quite difficult to pull off.

Carry on Typing

Curse of Monkey Island - Soon, I'll use this voodoo cannonball to send my significant other to the significant OTHERWORLD! Bwa, ha, ha. That'll show her how much I truly care.
This is a classic game, and i really enjoyed playing it as a child. I cant say im too keen on the quote though, a really long and hilarious game and its one of the weakest quotes in it. It could be really interesting to twist this quote though and mix it with a wierd art style.

Duke Nukem - It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum and I'm all out of gum.
A badass game with a badass character. This makes me think of a really action guy style. The quote and the game are so iconic in video games.

Interstate '76
Skeeter: "I fixed it up just like you wanted"
Groove: "Thanks."
Skeeter: "Jade built a good car, but she got out."
Groove: "What?"
Skeeter: "Never get out of the car."
This is by far my least favourite quote, something about it really irritates me, i think its the fact that its a speech segment and probably because the characters sound like a bunch of hillbillys. Im pretty sure this isnt the quote im going to pick.

Lets start at the Beginning - Initial Thoughts

My first look at the brief has given me quite a few ideas for varying topics from the chosen categories firstly I'm going to do a brief run through of the pros and cons of each starting with the title quotes. These are purely initial first thoughts.

Baldurs Gate ~ It may be a touch unlady-like but I'm gonna crush you i am.
This could take many forms, baldurs gate is an old fantasy rpg and the first thing that springs to mind is a female dwarf or some sort of giant. Even a warrior of sorts but the fact would remain it is a female character. This quote Doesnt really jump out at me too much, it could pose quite a humerous image but i feel the other quotes are more to my liking.

Rampage: Universal Tour ~ Alien News Anchor: Our cities lie in ruin, but this is only a temporary setback! We will not be denied! We will--AGGHHH!
I played this game years ago on an old Atari pixelated monsters rain havoc on a city. The quote could provide a really dynamic scene dependant on the art style, i quite like this but i feel its quite constraining.

Half-Life ~ Don't Shoot! I'm with the science team!
This is personally my favourite quote, its from my childhood favourite game and it is so fantastically open ended, the only information you can aquire from it is someone is trying to shoot someone else. Half life itself was set in a diverse universe so alot can be taken from the background. This is the quote i feel at the moment im going to run with.
